Practical Techniques for Rehabilitating Equine Athletes – The Horse

After a long ride or horse show, it is crucial to pay attention to your horse’s post-exercise recovery. A slow cool-down is essential in hastening cardiovascular recovery time and minimizing muscle soreness in the following days. This process involves removing heat and metabolic byproducts from deep muscles, which is vital for your horse’s overall well-being.

Erin Contino, an eventer and assistant professor of equine sports medicine and rehabilitation, emphasizes the importance of conditioning in the efficiency of cooling down. A proper warm-up before exercise primes the body and optimizes functions by increasing oxygen to the tissues and releasing red blood cells into circulation. This process also enables muscle tissues to access energy stores and improve elasticity, ultimately helping to prevent injuries.

After the ride, a proper cool-down should begin with slow movement to increase the removal of heat and lactic acid from the muscles. This not only facilitates rapid cardiovascular recovery but also helps minimize muscle soreness in the days following the exercise. Cooling techniques such as sponging or hosing the horse with water, scraping it away immediately, and repeating the process until the chest is cool to the touch can aid in the recovery process.

Water, feed, and electrolytes play a crucial role in post-exercise recovery. All horses need water to keep their metabolism working effectively. Depending on the type of exercise, horses may need to cool down sufficiently before being allowed to drink water. Electrolyte supplementation may be necessary for endurance horses or those engaged in anaerobic exercise to replenish lost minerals.

Addressing the legs after heavy exercise is essential to reduce inflammation and pain. Leg icing can help cool the limbs and reduce swelling, especially for endurance horses. Submerging legs in ice water or using commercial icing systems can effectively cool tissues beneath the skin. After icing, applying clay-based poultice and using standing wraps can further aid in the recovery process.

Arriving a few days early to a competition and allowing your horse time to recover can be beneficial. During transport, taking breaks every few hours to let the horse rest and graze can help reduce stress and fatigue.

Back at home, turnout and light exercise can aid in the recovery process. Monitoring your horse for any signs of tying-up or muscle soreness is essential. Palpating each limb thoroughly and checking for heat, swelling, or sensitivity can help identify any issues early on. Using these strategies at every level of training and competition can help maximize your horse’s athletic longevity.
