Nusantara Regas, a leading energy company in Indonesia, has demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability through its recent mangrove planting initiative on Untung Jawa Island in Kepulauan Seribu. This initiative is in line with the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles that the company upholds in all its corporate actions. On February 22, Nusantara Regas, in collaboration with local government representatives, the Untung Jawa Island Tourism Awareness Youth Group, and community members, planted 10,000 mangrove seedlings along the coast of the island.
Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting coastal areas from erosion, absorbing air pollution, and providing a habitat for various marine species. By planting mangroves, Nusantara Regas aims to contribute to the preservation of the environment and support the local ecosystem. Erwin Jonathan, the Head of HSSE Department at Nusantara Regas, emphasized that this initiative is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, particularly in areas near its operational sites. The mangrove planting event also coincided with the celebration of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) month, highlighting the company’s dedication to promoting a safe and healthy work environment.
In addition to the recent planting of 10,000 mangrove seedlings, Nusantara Regas has already planted 160,000 mangroves in its operational areas. Ratna Dumila, the Corporate Secretary of Nusantara Regas, emphasized the company’s support for community development, especially in the regions surrounding its operations. The planted mangroves are expected to not only enhance environmental sustainability but also provide economic benefits, particularly in the tourism sector. To ensure the growth and maintenance of the mangrove plants, Nusantara Regas has partnered with the Tourism Awareness Youth Group, who will oversee the care and protection of the newly planted seedlings.
Mangroves are known for their ability to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby helping to mitigate climate change. Studies have shown that mangroves can absorb between 0.5 to 2.0 tons of carbon per hectare per year, depending on various factors. If the 10,000 mangrove seedlings planted by Nusantara Regas cover an area of one hectare, they have the potential to reduce approximately ten tons of carbon emissions annually. This effort aligns with the Indonesian government’s goal of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or earlier, demonstrating Nusantara Regas‘ commitment to supporting national and global environmental targets.
Overall, Nusantara Regas‘ mangrove planting initiative on Untung Jawa Island serves as a shining example of corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship. By investing in sustainable practices and community engagement, the company is not only protecting the environment but also creating long-term benefits for both the ecosystem and local communities. As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, initiatives like these are crucial in promoting a greener and more sustainable future for all.
