Prevent the Massacre of Dogs in Turkey: Urgent Appeal to the Turkish Parliament

In recent news, animal welfare advocates are sounding the alarm as Türkiye faces a proposed amendment that could result in the mass killing of millions of stray dogs and cats. This potential legislation has sparked outrage among animal lovers worldwide, who see it as a grave violation of ethical responsibilities and shared humanity.

The Turkish Association of Veterinarians has strongly condemned the proposed amendment, labeling the act of killing stray animals as inhumane, inefficient, and counterproductive. The current situation in Turkey’s animal shelters, often misrepresented as safe havens, paints a grim picture of neglect and suffering. These shelters have been described as death camps where animals lack basic necessities and often starve to death.

A petition launched by the Animal Save Movement sheds light on the harsh reality faced by animals in Turkey, stating that sick dogs, banned breeds, and physiologically impaired dogs could be euthanized under the proposed law. Even healthy, neutered/spayed, and non-aggressive dogs may face unjustified killings, solely to reduce the population. The petition also highlights the role of breeders in contributing to the stray animal overpopulation crisis.

The potential repercussions of this proposed massacre extend beyond animal welfare concerns. UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell warns that such actions could have severe consequences for Turkey’s reputation on the global stage. She emphasizes that the planned mass extermination would not only harm animals but also tarnish Turkey’s image, potentially leading to significant economic losses from tourism boycotts.

Contrary to the proposed killing of stray animals, research and experiences from other nations suggest that sterilization programs, coupled with well-supported shelters, offer a more sustainable solution. The Turkish Association of Veterinarians advocates for the „Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return“ program, which is not only humane but also cost-effective. This approach addresses the root causes of animal population growth and promotes a compassionate society.

Türkiye has a long-standing tradition of coexisting with dogs and cats on its streets, fostering a unique bond between humans and animals. The current law supports humane practices like the „Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return“ approach, which reflects Türkiye’s values of compassion and wisdom. However, the proposed amendments fail to address the underlying issues contributing to animal population growth and do not impose penalties for animal cruelty.

In response to these concerning developments, various organizations and individuals have come together to urge the Turkish Parliament to reject the inhumane proposals and instead embrace humane alternatives. These groups emphasize the importance of comprehensive sterilization programs and well-resourced shelters to ensure the well-being of stray and free-roaming animals in Türkiye. By standing united for a compassionate future, they believe that Türkiye can continue to be a nation that values and protects all forms of life.

As the world watches and waits for a decision from the Turkish Parliament, the call to action remains clear: reject cruelty and embrace compassion. The choices made now will not only impact the lives of countless animals but also shape the reputation and values of a nation. Let us stand together in defense of the voiceless and work towards a future where all beings are treated with kindness and respect.
