Rare ‚apocalyptic fish‘ discovered off California coast just days prior to earthquake

Marine researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, California, made a remarkable discovery recently when they stumbled upon a rare and massive oarfish off the coast of La Jolla Cove. The oarfish, measuring an impressive 12 feet in length, was found already deceased by a team of science kayakers and snorkelers. This finding is particularly significant as oarfish sightings are incredibly rare, with less than two dozen confirmed sightings in California since 1901. In fact, one oarfish discovered in 1996 measured a staggering 36 feet long, highlighting the extraordinary nature of these deep-sea creatures.

The oarfish, also known as the „doomsday fish,“ has garnered a reputation for being a harbinger of bad news, particularly disasters or destruction. According to Ocean Conservancy, oarfish are often associated with ominous events, leading to their ominous nickname. This belief is further supported by historical accounts, such as the 2011 catastrophic earthquake in Japan, where a total of 20 oarfish washed ashore prior to the devastating seismic event. The connection between oarfish sightings and natural disasters has sparked curiosity and speculation among scientists and researchers.

The recent discovery of the oarfish in California took on an eerie significance when just two days later, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck the nearby Los Angeles area. While it is important to note that there is no scientific evidence linking oarfish sightings to seismic activity, the timing of these events has certainly captured the attention of both the scientific community and the general public. The mysterious nature of the oarfish, coupled with its association with potential disasters, adds an intriguing layer to this already fascinating discovery.

As researchers continue to study and learn more about the oarfish and its behavior, there is much to uncover about these enigmatic creatures and their role in the marine ecosystem. The recent finding in California serves as a reminder of the wonders and mysteries that lie beneath the surface of our oceans, waiting to be explored and understood. Whether the oarfish truly holds any predictive powers or is simply a fascinating deep-sea dweller, its presence continues to captivate and intrigue those who encounter it.
