Revitalizing Tasik Chini with Flowering and Fruit-Bearing Trees

The Academy Of Sciences Malaysia Tasik Chini Task Force chairman, Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Tajuddin Abdullah, has proposed a solution to rehabilitate Tasik Chini’s ecosystem by suggesting the planting of wild fruits and flowering trees. This suggestion comes after a report last month revealed that the biosphere reserve in Pahang was under scrutiny and did not meet the criteria to be part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) first 10-year periodical review of the lake.

The report highlighted issues such as newly cleared forest areas with intensive land conversion, the reopening of old mines nearby, and confusing documentation provided to Unesco. However, there is hope for Tasik Chini’s rehabilitation as Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan announced on August 9 that any activity that could harm the lake, including new approvals for sand and mineral mining, would be halted.

Tajuddin praised the efforts towards rehabilitating Tasik Chini, stating that both federal and state governments have taken measures to protect the area. Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail also reported that 80% of the Tasik Chini area in Pekan has been successfully rehabilitated through greening efforts, with ground-cover plants being grown at a 200-hectare area using funds from the Forest Development Trust Fund.

The chairman emphasized the importance of planting trees such as fig, brush cherry, tapioca, and other edible fruits to revive the lake’s ecosystem and enhance its sustainability. By attracting insects like bees, which in turn attract birds, a balanced ecosystem can be established. Figs, in particular, are a food source for various animals, contributing to the overall health of the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem in Tasik Chini.

Tajuddin stressed that good environmental management and monitoring are crucial in ensuring the success of the rehabilitation efforts. By implementing these measures and focusing on planting wild fruit trees, Tasik Chini can be restored to its former glory as a biosphere reserve. The collaborative efforts of government officials, environmentalists, and local communities are essential in preserving and protecting this precious natural resource for future generations.
