Thursday, August 1st, 2024 marked a special day at the Auglaize County Fair, where young people showcased their dedication and hard work in forming deep connections with their horses. Among these talented individuals was Kayleigh Hickman, a 16-year-old sophomore at Wapakoneta High School, who demonstrated remarkable patience and skill in transforming her horse, Pearl, into a grand champion.
Pearl, a grey American quarter horse with black spots, initially presented a challenge to those who attempted to handle her. Known for her stubborn and irritable nature, Pearl would react aggressively to any form of intrusion. However, Kayleigh Hickman’s gentle approach and unwavering patience gradually earned Pearl’s trust, leading to a remarkable transformation in their relationship.
Hickman, a member of the Fryburg Happy Farmers 4-H Club, not only won the top prize in the ages 14-18 category at the fair but also garnered numerous other ribbons with Pearl by her side. Their journey together began five years ago when Hickman started riding Pearl, eventually becoming her owner three years later. Despite Pearl’s reputation as a challenging horse, Hickman remained determined to win her over.
With Sophia Jolly, her trusted assistant, by her side, Hickman embarked on a journey of building a strong bond with Pearl. Through daily interactions filled with patience and understanding, Hickman gradually gained Pearl’s trust and respect. This newfound connection paved the way for intensive training sessions aimed at refining Pearl’s skills and behavior.
Over the course of five years, Hickman and Pearl developed a deep understanding of each other’s emotions and intentions. Hickman described Pearl as the most sensitive horse she had ever ridden, capable of sensing her rider’s emotions with remarkable accuracy. This heightened level of communication and trust between the two allowed them to excel in various competitions and showcases.
Witnesses marveled at the unique bond that had formed between Hickman and Pearl, noting Hickman’s gentle and calm approach as the key to their success. Hickman’s grandparents, Ed and Debbie Hickman, expressed their pride in Kayleigh’s achievements and the special connection she shared with Pearl. As Kayleigh looks towards the future, she envisions a career in equine training, inspired by her transformative journey with Pearl.
The Auglaize County Fair served as a platform for young equestrians like Kayleigh Hickman to showcase their dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to their horses. Through patience, perseverance, and a deep understanding of their equine companions, these young individuals exemplified the true essence of partnership and harmony between humans and horses.
