Scientist recommends that young children and pets avoid swimming in the water at Lake Harbor Park

The contamination advisory that was put in place for Lake Harbor Park in Norton Shores has been lifted, but officials are still cautioning against having small children and pets near green water present with algae. The advisory was initially issued due to an elevated amount of E.coli bacteria in the near-shore water of Lake Michigan. People were advised to keep small children and pets out of the water, avoid drinking the water, and rinse off after swimming.

Alexis Porter, a research scientist for the Grand Valley State University Annis Water Resources Institute, emphasized the importance of being cautious when swimming in green water. She mentioned that the potential risks range from minor issues to severe consequences, such as the death of a pet. While Lake Michigan as a whole is considered safe, the shoreline area near Lake Harbor Park was a point of concern.

The Michigan Beach Guard website provides updated information on beach advisories and closures, with Lake Harbor Park remaining open despite the contamination advisory. Porter explained that the elevated levels of bacteria were likely due to existing algal blooms in Mona Lake, which can harbor E.coli bacteria from animals in the water or leaking septic systems. Warmer temperatures this year also contributed to the presence of bacteria, as the water remained warm enough to sustain E.coli.

The City of Norton Shores issued an alert on their Facebook page, warning swimmers and water users to avoid the area immediately north of the mouth of Mona Lake. Lake Harbor Park, situated between Lake Michigan and Mona Lake, is monitored by the Annis Water Resources Institute. Porter and her team were actively retesting the waters to ensure safety for swimmers and other water users.

In conclusion, while the contamination advisory has been lifted, it is essential to remain cautious when near green water with algae. By following the guidelines provided by officials and avoiding potential sources of contamination, individuals can enjoy the recreational activities at Lake Harbor Park safely.
