Scientists have discovered that the virus responsible for COVID-19 is prevalent among wildlife populations

The study conducted by Virginia Tech researchers sheds light on the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, in wildlife species commonly found in Virginia. Published in Nature Communications, the research revealed that the virus was detected in six backyard species, with antibodies indicating prior exposure found in five of these species. Exposure rates ranged from 40 to 60%, depending on the species, highlighting the widespread nature of the virus among wildlife.

Genetic tracking of the virus in wild animals showed the presence of unique viral mutations closely matching variants circulating in humans at the time. This finding suggests human-to-animal transmission of the virus, particularly in areas with high human activity such as hiking trails and public spaces. The study emphasized the importance of surveillance to monitor these mutations, as they could potentially impact vaccine development and pose challenges for controlling the spread of the virus.

One significant discovery from the study was the identification of previously unreported viral mutations in an opossum, indicating the potential for changes in the virus that could affect humans and their immune response. This highlights the need for continued research and monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 in wildlife to better understand the dynamics of virus transmission between humans and animals.

Carla Finkielstein, a professor of biological sciences at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, likened the virus to a hitchhiker seeking new hosts for survival. The virus’s ability to adapt and mutate to thrive in different hosts underscores the importance of studying its transmission in wildlife populations. While the study did not find evidence of the virus being transmitted from animals to humans, it emphasized the need for caution in interactions with wildlife, especially in areas with high human activity.

The research team collected samples from 23 common Virginia species, including deer mice, raccoons, and Eastern cottontail rabbits, to assess the presence of the virus and antibodies indicating previous infections. The study revealed a high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in wildlife, with exposure rates varying across species and locations with varying levels of human activity.

The study’s findings have broader implications beyond Virginia, as many of the species tested are common wildlife found throughout North America. The researchers stressed the need for surveillance across a wider region to understand the extent of virus transmission in wildlife populations. By studying the mutations and transmission patterns of SARS-CoV-2 in wildlife, scientists can gain valuable insights into the virus’s potential impact on various species and ecosystems.
