Sea lions on local beaches are falling ill due to domoic acid poisoning

A domoic acid event is causing serious health issues for marine mammals across the Central Coast, particularly sea lions. The Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) has been at the forefront of rescuing and treating these affected animals. Ken Hughes, a member of CIMWI, described the distressing symptoms that sea lions exhibit when suffering from domoic acid poisoning. These symptoms include disorientation, confusion, seizures, and even foaming at the mouth.

Hughes explained that domoic acid is a neurotoxin that specifically targets the cerebral cortex section of the brain, causing physical damage. This damage is devastating to the animals and can have severe consequences. Last year, CIMWI rescued a total of 97 sea lions with domoic acid poisoning, and in just the last five days, 19 more have been brought in. David Mendelson, another member of CIMWI, highlighted the cumulative effect of repeated exposure to domoic acid, stating that each subsequent dose worsens the outcomes for the animals.

Upon capture, the affected animals are transported to CIMWI’s animal hospital to receive supportive care. The dedicated volunteers at CIMWI work tirelessly to give these animals every opportunity to recover and regain their health. However, it is crucial for the public to be aware of how to respond if they encounter a sea lion suffering from domoic acid poisoning.

CIMWI advises against certain actions when encountering a sick marine animal. Pouring water on the sea lion, coaxing or pushing it into the ocean, feeding it, touching or petting it, harassing it, covering it, or getting too close are all actions that should be avoided. Sea lions, despite their cute appearance, are wild animals that can inflict painful bites if provoked. It is important to respect their space and not put yourself or the animal in danger.
