Signs and Symptoms to Determine if Your Dog is Pregnant

If you suspect that your furry friend may be pregnant, there are several signs to look out for. Much like human pregnancies, dog pregnancies come with their own set of symptoms and changes. The gestation period for dogs typically lasts between 58 and 68 days, and while there are no at-home pregnancy tests available, a visit to the vet is essential for confirmation.

Dr. Jessica Romine, a specialist in small animal internal medicine, explains that there are several diagnostic tests that can confirm a dog’s pregnancy. Around 30 days into the pregnancy, blood tests can measure relaxin hormone levels to confirm pregnancy. An ultrasound can also be performed at this time to detect the tiny heartbeats of the developing puppies. However, it is important to note that an ultrasound may not accurately determine the number of puppies present. For a more accurate count, an X-ray is recommended, typically around 50 to 55 days into the pregnancy when the puppies‘ skeletons are mineralized enough to be visible.

In addition to these diagnostic tests, there are other signs that may indicate your dog is pregnant. One common symptom is vomiting or mild stomach upset, which can occur about three weeks after conception. This is similar to morning sickness in humans and is caused by hormonal changes. While this usually resolves on its own, persistent signs of illness should prompt a visit to the vet.

Another sign of pregnancy is fatigue. Pregnant dogs may experience fatigue in the early weeks of pregnancy, similar to humans. However, their energy levels usually return to normal until the later stages of pregnancy when they may need more rest due to weight gain.

Physical changes, such as enlarging teats and weight gain, are also common indicators of pregnancy. Teats may become more pink and produce a small amount of liquid about a month after mating. Weight gain typically becomes noticeable around seven weeks into the pregnancy, with the abdomen appearing larger than normal. Increased appetite is also a sign of pregnancy, with caloric needs rising after the halfway mark.

As the pregnancy progresses, nesting behaviors may become more apparent. Dogs may exhibit behaviors such as withdrawing to a quiet, safe place and arranging blankets in preparation for labor. It is important to provide a comfortable and secure environment for the mother during this time.

It is essential to note that some dogs may experience a false pregnancy, where hormonal fluctuations mimic the signs of pregnancy. This can be challenging to differentiate from a true pregnancy, so a visit to the vet is necessary for an accurate diagnosis.

In conclusion, if you suspect that your dog may be pregnant, it is crucial to observe for signs such as vomiting, fatigue, physical changes, increased appetite, and nesting behaviors. A visit to the vet for diagnostic tests and confirmation is the best course of action to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and her potential puppies.
