Some vets and pet-owners skeptical of Dolce & Gabbana’s new perfume for dogs

Dolce & Gabbana, a renowned fashion house, has recently introduced a new alcohol-free perfume for dogs named ‘Fefé’ in honor of Domenico Dolce’s beloved poodle. The perfume, priced at 99 euros for 100 milliliters, has been certified as suitable for animal use. It follows a Safe Pet Cosmetics protocol to ensure the safety and well-being of pets, comparable to the standards required for human cosmetic products. Bureau Veritas Italia, a reputable company providing inspection and certification services, has granted compliance recognition to this protocol, emphasizing the company’s commitment to creating products that prioritize the safety and respect of animals.

According to the company’s website dedicated to ‘Fefé’, dog owners have reported that the fragrance is gentle and well-received by their pets. Veterinarians have also approved of the product, citing positive performance reviews by both professionals and customers. However, not all veterinarians agree on the use of perfumes for dogs. Some express concerns that fragrances may interfere with the animal’s sense of smell, which is crucial for their recognition and communication with their surroundings.

Federico Coccía, a veterinarian in Rome, highlights the importance of dogs‘ sense of smell in their daily interactions. He explains that dogs rely on smells to recognize people and objects, and altering these scents through perfumes could disrupt their natural behaviors. Coccía also points out that covering up odors, such as those related to dermatological diseases, could hinder veterinarians in diagnosing and treating underlying health issues in dogs.

Despite differing opinions among veterinarians, groomers like Aliof Rilova Tano at La Boutique delle Birbe parlor in Rome express support for using fragrances on pets. Tano believes that adding a pleasant scent to dogs enhances their presence at home and during grooming sessions. Customers, such as Mariarita Ricciardi, also appreciate the use of fragrances that contribute to the overall well-being and aesthetics of their pets‘ hair.

On the other hand, some pet owners, like Francesca Castelli, are hesitant to use perfumes on their animals, particularly branded ones. Castelli views the practice as an excessive form of humanization that may not align with the natural essence of pets. Ultimately, the decision to use perfumes on dogs remains a personal choice for pet owners, taking into consideration their pets‘ well-being and individual preferences.

In conclusion, the introduction of ‘Fefé’ by Dolce & Gabbana has sparked a debate among veterinarians, groomers, and pet owners regarding the use of perfumes for dogs. While some advocate for the benefits of fragrances in enhancing pets‘ grooming experience, others caution against potential risks to dogs‘ sensory abilities and health. As the discussion continues, it is essential for pet owners to make informed decisions that prioritize the safety and comfort of their beloved companions.
