The SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is currently in need of egg donations to help feed the 145 wild animals under their care. These animals, which include species such as opossums, raccoons, scrub jays, and gulls, rely on protein-rich eggs for their recovery and growth. Eggs play a crucial role in the diet of these animals, providing essential nutrients that help them grow strong and healthy.
At the Wildlife Center, hard-boiled or scrambled eggs are served to adult animals recovering from injuries and orphaned babies who are too young to fend for themselves in the wild. For baby raccoons transitioning from bottle-feeding, a custard made from raccoon formula and eggs is used to introduce them to solid foods. These eggs are vital for the animals‘ well-being and play a significant role in their rehabilitation process.
Community members can support the SPCA Wildlife Center by donating raw eggs at their location on 1002 Monterey-Salinas Highway in Salinas. Donations are accepted daily between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., and eggs past their ‚best by‘ date are also welcome. For those unable to donate eggs, financial contributions can be made online or by phone. The Wildlife Center relies entirely on the generosity of donors as they do not receive government funding.
The SPCA Wildlife Center is the only full-service wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Monterey County, operating under permits from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Each year, the center admits over 2,500 animals for treatment and care, highlighting the critical role they play in wildlife conservation efforts.
In addition to their wildlife rescue efforts, the SPCA Monterey County also provides shelter and care for homeless, neglected, and abused pets and livestock. Established in 1905, the nonprofit, independent, donor-supported humane society serves the animals and people of Monterey County with a wide range of services, including humane education, animal cruelty investigation, and rescue operations.
By supporting the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center through egg donations or financial contributions, individuals can play a vital role in helping these wild animals recover and thrive. Your support can make a difference in the lives of these animals and contribute to the important work of wildlife conservation and rehabilitation.
