Teaching My Dog’s Best Trick: A Step-by-Step Guide

Have you ever wondered about the amazing tricks that dogs can learn? I recently reached out to some friends online to learn about the best tricks their dogs have mastered and how they taught them. The responses I received were both fascinating and inspiring, showcasing the incredible bond between humans and their canine companions.

Eileen Anderson from Arkansas shared a unique trick that her dog Clara has mastered – taking a pill without the need for disguises. Eileen explained that swallowing something can be trained as a behavior, and she started by gradually introducing Clara to the concept using small pieces of kibble and then transitioning to empty gelatin capsules. With patience and positive reinforcement, Clara now takes her daily pill without any fuss, much to Eileen’s pride.

Tim Beau from Oregon highlighted how his dogs play flyball, a high-energy relay race for dogs. While not a traditional trick, Tim emphasized the skill and coordination required for this sport, showcasing the intelligence and athleticism of his canine companions.

Erin Saywell from Indiana shared the story of her dog Seeker, who taught herself the Sit-Pretty/Beg trick. A stray from Baltimore City, Seeker now enjoys participating in flyball, lure coursing, and dock diving at the age of nine. Erin’s bond with Seeker is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of rescue dogs.

Dot Dill from Colorado revealed a clever trick that her dog performs – wiping his drooling jowls after eating or drinking. This self-taught behavior was reinforced with treats and a cue, demonstrating how dogs can learn practical and amusing tricks with the right motivation.

Risë VanFleet from Pennsylvania shared a heartwarming story about her rescue dog Kirrie, who taught herself to open and close the door when coming inside. Through a process of backward chaining and positive reinforcement, Kirrie mastered this skill effortlessly, showcasing the intelligence and problem-solving abilities of dogs.

Kate Jones from Alaska recounted how her border collie learned to retrieve a coke from the refrigerator. By breaking down the task into smaller steps and using a combination of commands and rewards, Kate’s dog now serves as her „freckled butler,“ showcasing the versatility and trainability of border collies.

Jill Gibbs from Montana highlighted how her golden retriever Ian learned to „barrel race“ through agility training. With a diverse range of activities including dock diving, Fast CAT, barnhunt, and Trick Dog trials, Ian’s agility and enthusiasm for learning new tricks are a testament to the bond between Jill and her canine companion.

Shannon Thier from North Carolina shared a remarkable story about her dog Pongo, a Husky/Dalmatian cross, who learned to play the piano through clicker training. By shaping and reinforcing specific behaviors, Shannon was able to teach Pongo to press keys on the piano and even play the chimes, showcasing the cognitive abilities and creativity of dogs.

These stories serve as a reminder of the incredible bond between humans and dogs, as well as the endless possibilities for training and enrichment. Whether it’s a practical skill like taking a pill or a fun trick like playing the piano, dogs are capable of learning and mastering a wide range of behaviors with the right guidance and motivation. So why not try teaching your dog a new trick today and see where your shared journey takes you? The possibilities are endless, and the rewards are immeasurable.
