Texas Family Uses Warm Tortilla to Protect Baby Bird

An animal-loving family used what they had on hand to help a wild baby bird, and their quick thinking and resourcefulness made a significant impact on the bird’s well-being. The Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Amarillo, Texas, shared the heartwarming story on their Facebook page, highlighting the family’s unconventional yet effective approach to rescuing the orphaned barn owl.

According to the center’s post on July 14, they received a call about a possible orphaned barn owl that was found by a family while they were swimming and barbequing. The family had discovered the baby bird on the ground without any parents nearby and took immediate action to help it. When the rehabber from Wild West Wildlife inquired if the bird had been placed in a box, the family revealed that they had wrapped the bird in a warm tortilla.

Despite the unorthodox method, the family’s concern for the baby bird’s well-being was evident. The mother even requested to warm up a tortilla on the grill to provide heat for the hatchling, showing their dedication to keeping the bird safe and comfortable. This creative solution ultimately proved to be effective, as the baby bird was warm and secure when the rescuer arrived.

The wildlife rescuer identified the bird as a Mississippi kite and brought it to the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for further care. The center is now raising funds to cover the supplies needed for the bird’s recovery, including food such as insects and frozen mice. The baby bird, affectionately named Taquito by the staff, is adapting well to its new environment and has become a popular online sensation.

The heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and resourcefulness when it comes to helping wild animals in need. The Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center offers valuable tips for those who encounter wildlife in distress, emphasizing the importance of contacting a wildlife rescue and providing proper care until the animal can be transported to a rescue center.
