Dodge recently made waves in the automotive world with the announcement of their new lineup of crate engines. The first in line after the announcement seems to be the Hurricrate engines, which were unveiled in November 2022. The Hurricrates have finally arrived, starting with the Cat 1 and Cat 3 models.
The Cat 1 engine, aptly named for its stormy power, produces 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque with a boost of 22 psi from twin turbos and a compression ratio of 10.4:1. Featuring an aluminum block, dual overhead cam heads, forged aluminum pistons, and liquid cooling for the exhaust manifold and intercooler, this engine is a powerhouse. On the other hand, the Cat 3 Hurricrate offers upgrades such as forged aluminum pistons and rings, low-friction coatings on the wrist pins, increased fuel injection flow, and additional cooling for the intercooler. With a reduced compression ratio of 9.5:1 and a boost of 26 psi, the Cat 3 engine cranks out an impressive 550 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque.
The Cat 1 long block is priced at $7,995, while the complete crate engine costs $10,495. The Cat 3 long block comes in at $11,715, with the crate engine priced at $13,745. For those who order before November 8th, the Cat 1 engine comes with a $200 Visa gift card, while the Cat 3 engine includes a $125 Visa gift card.
Dodge has also announced two transmissions, the DC1 and DC2, designed to pair with these engines. However, these transmissions are still in development, and information about them is scarce. Additionally, Dodge is teasing another Hurricrate engine, the Cat X, which is a track-focused variant capable of producing over 1,000 horsepower.
In addition to the Hurricrate engines, Dodge also unveiled three new Hellephant engines alongside the announcement. These supercharged V8 engines come in 426 cubic inch (7.0L) variants, with the main difference being the block material – either aluminum or cast iron. The cast iron version has a smaller displacement of 376 cubic inches (6.2L) and features a smaller 3.0-liter supercharger pulley and a larger 105mm throttle body. The cast iron Hellephant engine boasts various improvements in valve train, connecting rods, bearings, and main bearing caps.
The nomenclature for these engines indicates the material used for the block and the type of fuel they are designed for. Engines with an „A“ designation are aluminum, while those with a „C“ designation are cast iron. The numbers following the letter indicate the proof of alcohol the engine can handle, with E15 rated at 30 proof and E85 at 170 proof. For example, the C30 engine can produce up to 900 horsepower, while the others can reach 1,000 horsepower or more.
The Hellephant C170 engine is currently available, with the long block priced at $18,995 and the complete crate engine at $27,675. These engines require a compatible transmission like the DC2 gearbox.
In conclusion, Dodge’s new lineup of Hurricrate and Hellephant engines offers a range of powerful options for enthusiasts looking to upgrade their vehicles. With impressive performance figures and innovative features, these engines are sure to make a mark in the automotive world.
