In July, the planet experienced its highest-ever recorded average temperature, reaching a global average surface temperature of 17.09°C (62.76°F). This alarming increase in temperature is a clear indication of the ongoing effects of global warming, which are being felt across the globe. The impact of climate change is particularly devastating for wild animals and their habitats, exacerbating existing threats such as poaching and habitat destruction.
Despite these challenges, organizations like Animal Survival International (ASI) are working tirelessly to support and protect wild animals in need. Through the support of generous donors and supporters, ASI is able to provide crucial assistance to wildlife in crisis. Let’s take a closer look at some of the projects that ASI has been involved in to help wild animals around the world in July.
Botswana, Makgadikgadi National Park: One of the projects supported by ASI involved rushing food to a pod of starving hippos in Botswana. The hippos, facing a severe drought, had resorted to eating elephant dung to survive. Thanks to the quick response of supporters, ASI was able to provide food to the hungry hippos, with ongoing support planned until the expected rains in December.
South Africa, Mpumalanga: ASI partnered with Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary to protect orphaned black rhino calves Odin and Marcules. These calves, left vulnerable after losing their mothers, were rehabilitated and fitted with cutting-edge AI-powered collars for added protection against poachers.
Zimbabwe, Lake Kariba: In the Lake Kariba region, ASI supported the Bumi Hills Anti-Poaching Unit in increasing snare patrols to combat the deadly bushmeat trade. Despite challenges in meeting their goal, ASI remains committed to supporting efforts to remove snares and protect wildlife in the area.
Ukraine, Kyiv Oblast: ASI worked with the Wild Animal Rescue Center to rescue and treat big cats, including two lion cubs with fractured legs found near the frontline of the war in Ukraine. With limited resources, ASI aims to provide support for the care and treatment of these traumatized animals.
These projects highlight the critical role that organizations like ASI play in protecting and supporting wildlife in crisis. By raising awareness, mobilizing resources, and collaborating with local partners, ASI is making a difference in the lives of wild animals around the world.
In addition to these projects, ASI stays informed about the latest wildlife conservation news to keep supporters updated on critical issues affecting animals today. From devastating fires to controversial hunting permits, ASI remains vigilant in advocating for the protection of wildlife and their habitats.
The achievements and successes of ASI are made possible by the generosity and support of donors and supporters. By standing together as friends to the animals, we can make a meaningful impact in preserving and protecting the incredible diversity of wildlife on our planet. Thank you for being a part of this important mission to safeguard wild animals and their habitats.
