The Inherent Value of Wildlife in Cheryl Kimball’s Nature Talks | Outdoors

Nature has a way of captivating us with its simplicity and beauty. One of the things I love most about nature, especially wildlife, is that it operates independently of the distractions and complexities that consume human life. While we are glued to our screens and devices, animals go about their daily routines with no knowledge or interest in our technological world.

As I sit at my breakfast table, I often find myself mesmerized by the wildlife outside my window. A gray squirrel „sploots“ on the picnic table, a behavior that involves flattening itself belly-down with legs splayed out. It’s a simple act, yet it speaks volumes about the carefree nature of animals. There are no coffee cups or iPads in sight, just a squirrel enjoying a moment of relaxation.

Over the years, I have witnessed several generations of deer roaming around my property. One particular doe has become a regular visitor, showing up at the bird feeder area in the evenings. She patiently waits for me to forget to bring in the feeders, seizing the opportunity to feast on the sunflower seeds. It’s a reminder of the symbiotic relationship between humans and wildlife, where simple actions can have unintended consequences.

Recently, my husband discovered a menagerie of animals living under our barn, dubbing it „Cheryl’s Under-the-Barn Zoo.“ From gray foxes to raccoons and porcupines, each creature has found a home in this natural sanctuary. They coexist peacefully, unaffected by the distractions of human life. There are no video games or board games to occupy their time, just the simple act of survival.

Humans often underestimate the intelligence of wild animals, attributing their actions to instinct rather than cognitive ability. However, if we take the time to observe and understand their behaviors, we may realize that they have a different, not lesser, way of thinking. Foxes, for example, have been thriving in our area, despite misconceptions about their behavior.

Social media often perpetuates myths about wildlife, portraying them as threats to be feared rather than respected. The reality is that animals like foxes are simply following their natural instincts, not plotting against humans or their pets. It is our responsibility to coexist peacefully with wildlife, taking measures to protect our animals and property without resorting to fear or violence.

In a world that is increasingly dominated by human interests, it is important to remember that nature does not revolve around us. We must strive to coexist with wildlife, appreciating their presence without imposing our will upon them. By respecting the autonomy of nature, we can learn valuable lessons about simplicity, harmony, and the beauty of the natural world.

So, the next time you find yourself caught up in the chaos of modern life, take a moment to observe the wildlife around you. Embrace the simplicity and beauty of nature, and perhaps, like the squirrels, you may find comfort in the act of splooting and simply existing in the present moment.
