The Lucky Eight Horses Welcome a Surprise Addition: A New Filly Makes Nine

The newest addition to the Saving Gracie Equine Healing Foundation is a young foal named GiGi, who was born just two weeks ago. Her arrival came as a surprise to everyone at the foundation, as her mother, Cheyenne, was one of eight horses rescued from a kill pen by the foundation’s founder, Barbara Phillips. The horses, known as The Lucky Eight, were estimated to be around 4 months old and had been rounded up off a reservation, likely in Arizona.

Cheyenne’s pregnancy went unnoticed until just a few days before she gave birth, as most horses do not conceive until they are between 1-and-a-half and 2 years old. The foundation’s full-time veterinarian, Amanda Petty, explained that it is not ideal for horses to get pregnant at such a young age, as they are still growing themselves. The foundation typically takes a hands-off approach with rescued wild horses, allowing them to acclimate to humans at their own pace.

Despite initial disbelief, Phillips called a vet to examine Cheyenne when her belly began to swell. To everyone’s surprise, the vet confirmed that Cheyenne was indeed pregnant and would give birth within 10 days. Two days later, GiGi was born out in the field, with Cheyenne delivering her without any complications. The foal immediately began nursing and was accepted by the rest of the herd.

Horses typically have an 11-month gestation period, indicating that GiGi was conceived before Cheyenne was rescued by Phillips. This realization led Phillips to reflect on the importance of rescuing horses from kill pens, where they are often sent for slaughter in other countries. The foundation is advocating for the passage of the SAFE Act, which would prevent the sale of horses for human consumption.

GiGi continues to thrive under the care of her mother and the rest of the herd at Saving Gracie’s. With no fear of humans or traumas, she represents a clean slate for the foundation. As the team monitors the possibility of another pregnant horse, Wynonah, they are hopeful that this small herd may be lucky once again. Wynonah has taken on a nanny role for GiGi, showcasing her potential motherly instincts.
