The Lucky Eight Horses Welcome Surprise Birth of Ninth Filly

Young GiGi, the newest addition to the herd at Saving Gracie Equine Healing Foundation, has captured the hearts of all who meet her. Born just two weeks ago, GiGi’s arrival was a surprise to everyone, as her mother, Cheyenne, was rescued from a kill pen along with seven other horses just a few months prior. The horses, known as The Lucky Eight, were estimated to be around 4 months old at the time of their rescue, making it unlikely for Cheyenne to be pregnant. However, as Cheyenne’s belly swelled and her body changed, it became evident that a new life was on the way.

Barbara Phillips, the founder of Saving Gracie, was initially skeptical when staff members raised concerns about Cheyenne’s pregnancy. Most horses do not conceive until they are between 1-and-a-half and 2 years old, making Cheyenne’s situation quite unusual. Despite their hands-off approach to caring for the rescued horses, it became clear that Cheyenne was indeed pregnant, and the countdown to GiGi’s arrival began.

When the time came for GiGi to enter the world, Cheyenne gave birth out in the field, just as she would have in the wild. Thanks to the expertise of Saving Gracie’s veterinarian, Amanda Petty, and the resilience of both mother and baby, the birth went smoothly, and GiGi was nursing and thriving in no time. The bond between mother and daughter was evident as Cheyenne grazed while keeping a watchful eye on her curious and energetic offspring.

GiGi’s birth has brought attention to the harsh reality faced by many horses who end up in kill pens, destined for slaughterhouses across the border. The Lucky Eight, including GiGi and Cheyenne, were fortunate to be rescued by Saving Gracie, but many others are not as lucky. Phillips is a vocal advocate for the passage of the SAFE Act, which aims to prevent the sale of horses for human consumption and ensure their protection.

As GiGi continues to grow and explore her new world, the staff at Saving Gracie are keeping a close eye on another potentially pregnant mare, Wynonah. With GiGi’s arrival, Wynonah has taken on a nanny role, caring for the baby while Cheyenne rests and eats. The possibility of another new life on the way adds to the hope and optimism surrounding this small herd, who have overcome incredible odds to find safety and care at Saving Gracie.

GiGi’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of these magnificent animals, as well as the importance of organizations like Saving Gracie in providing them with a second chance at life.
