The Ragunan Wildlife Park in South Jakarta is set to welcome a new addition to its collection of animals in 2023 – the majestic Komodo dragon. This move is aimed at enhancing the appeal of the park and attracting more visitors from the local community.
The Head of the Ragunan Wildlife Park Management Unit, Endah Rummiyati, announced the exciting news, stating that a pair of Komodo dragons and several other animal species will be introduced to the park. This initiative is part of an animal exchange program with the Bogor Indonesian Safari Park (TSI), which will contribute to the diversity of animal species at Ragunan Wildlife Park.
Currently, the park boasts a total of 2,275 animals, including Indonesian endemic species such as anoa, elephants, and Sumatran orangutans. Additionally, there are animals from abroad, such as giraffes from the African savanna desert. The presence of the Komodo dragon will further enrich the park’s collection and provide visitors with a unique and educational experience.
In 2022, the park saw an increase in the number of animals, with the arrival of young giraffes and newborn elephants. The breeding success can be attributed to the reduced number of visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing the animals to thrive in a less disturbed environment.
Endah emphasized the importance of providing proper care for pregnant animals to ensure the health and well-being of newborns. The park’s staff closely monitor the animals‘ diet and behavior to support successful reproduction and growth.
During a recent event, the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, named a giraffe calf „Tazoo“ and an elephant „Unggul“ at Ragunan Wildlife Park. Both animals share the same birth date, September 5, 2022, adding a special significance to their presence in the park.
Currently, Ragunan Wildlife Park spans 147 hectares and is home to over 20,000 trees. The park is continuously being developed to transform into a modern zoo that reflects the identity of Jakarta as a vibrant and diverse city.
With the upcoming arrival of the Komodo dragon and the ongoing efforts to enhance the park’s facilities and animal collection, Ragunan Wildlife Park is poised to become a premier destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers in Jakarta.
