Therapy Miniature Horse Brings Joy to Residents at Brookdale Hearthstone

Residents at Brookdale Hearthstone Moses Lake were in for a delightful surprise when Luna, a miniature therapy horse, paid them a visit on July 16. Luna, brought by Jodi Peck of Kindhearted Mini Therapy, spent an hour charming residents with her gentle demeanor and adorable presence. The unexpected visit brought joy and excitement to the assisted living facility, with residents eagerly interacting with Luna.

Aleecia Robledo, the Activity Director at Brookdale Hearthstone, expressed her enthusiasm for incorporating more fun activities like Luna’s visit into the facility’s programming. Luna, a fully grown 7-year-old miniature horse standing at 34 inches tall, was specially equipped with shoes to prevent slipping and a manure bag to protect the floors. Peck shared that Luna and her companion, Bass, are trained to remain calm in various environments by regularly engaging with the public at events like parades and farmers markets.

While Luna’s visit was met with mostly positive reactions, there were a few residents who were initially startled by her presence. However, Luna quickly won over the hearts of the residents who eagerly petted and interacted with her. Ann Telecky, a former activity director, reminisced about her experiences with horses, while Nancy Bolyard fondly recalled her own horses, Princess and Duke. The residents were captivated by Luna’s beauty and gentle nature, creating a heartwarming atmosphere during her visit.

Peck shared her journey of transitioning from showing horses to focusing on equine therapy after receiving guidance from Honey’s Mini Therapy Adventures. She emphasized the therapeutic benefits of miniature horses, highlighting their ability to provide comfort and emotional support to individuals in various settings. Peck’s dedication to spreading joy and healing through her miniature therapy program is evident in her visits to assisted living facilities, hospitals, and even law enforcement events.

The emotional impact of Luna’s visit was profound, with one resident moved to tears by the experience. Peck explained that miniature horses like Luna have a healing radius that extends beyond physical proximity, making them powerful sources of comfort and solace. The heartwarming interactions between Luna and the residents at Brookdale Hearthstone exemplified the profound connection that can be forged between animals and humans in therapeutic settings.

Overall, Luna’s visit to Brookdale Hearthstone Moses Lake was a heartening and memorable experience for both the residents and staff. Peck’s dedication to using miniature horses for therapy underscores the profound impact that animals can have on individuals‘ well-being. As the facility looks forward to incorporating more engaging activities like Luna’s visit, the residents can anticipate more moments of joy, connection, and healing in the days to come.
