Thomas Limper, a resident of Dortmund / Witten, recently participated in the popular TV show „Top Dog Germany“ with his six-year-old German Shepherd, Yadira. While Limper and Yadira are seasoned in dog sports, the challenges presented in the show were unlike anything they had encountered before. From running up ramps to pulling rings and jumping into water, the duo had to showcase a whole new set of skills, including navigating through a ball pit – a task not typically associated with Schäferhunds.
Limper, a 57-year-old firefighter by profession and a dog trainer in Dortmund-Oespel, was quick to sign up for the show after being inspired by the first season. Despite Yadira’s lack of experience in agility tasks, Limper was confident in her exceptional learning ability and willingness to please. Their bond was evident as Limper expressed, „She would do anything for me, and I for her.“
Having initially applied without success, Limper’s persistence paid off when RTL accepted his application in January. Prior to the show, he had showcased Yadira’s talents through videos, highlighting their regular training sessions on a rented property near Witten during the pandemic. What started as a training ground for Limper and his two dogs evolved into Tom’s Hundeschule in 2021, a testament to his passion for canine companionship and training.
To prepare for the challenging tasks on „Top Dog Germany,“ Limper devised innovative training methods beyond the usual agility equipment. From hanging toilet paper rolls on a railing for Yadira to practice moving wobbly objects to teaching her new commands like „Touch“ and „Schieb“ (push), the duo honed their skills for the show. Limper’s dedication to Yadira’s training was evident as he shared, „If she didn’t do it voluntarily, it wouldn’t work. It’s a matter of trust. We are a team, but she is the star.“
The anticipation of the show did not faze Yadira, accustomed to performing at championships. Limper, on the other hand, was impressed by the studio setup and the supportive atmosphere. He commended the hosts, Jan Köppen and Laura Wontorra, for their down-to-earth demeanor and the overall experience of being on the show.
Looking ahead, Limper hopes to participate in future seasons of „Top Dog Germany“ to showcase the capabilities of a Schäferhund and the challenges they can overcome together. While winning is not his primary focus, he acknowledges the thrill of victory, stating, „But if it’s enough, then we’ll gladly take it.“
„Top Dog Germany“ airs on RTL from September 6th, Fridays at 8:15 pm. For more information on Thomas Limper and his dog training school, visit www.tomshundeschule.de. As Limper and Yadira continue to inspire with their teamwork and dedication, their journey on the show serves as a testament to the unbreakable bond between a man and his loyal canine companion.
