MIAMI, Florida — Tropical Storm Debby has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane as it approaches Florida. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported on Sunday evening that the storm now has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and is located about 100 miles west southwest of Tampa, moving north at 12 mph (19 kph).
Debby marks the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, following Tropical Storm Alberto, Hurricane Beryl, and Tropical Storm Chris, all of which formed in June. The storm’s progression has raised concerns among forecasters about the potential for catastrophic flooding in Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia.
Sheryl Horne, owner of the Shell Island Fish Camp in St. Marks, Florida, expressed her preparations for the storm, stating, „Right now, we are trying to secure everything from floating away.“ The region had previously experienced the impact of Hurricane Idalia, a Category 3 storm that made landfall last year.
Forecasters predict that Debby will move eastward over northern Florida and then stall over the coastal regions of Georgia and South Carolina, bringing record-setting rains totaling up to 30 inches (76 centimeters) starting Tuesday. Officials have also warned of life-threatening storm surge along Florida’s Gulf Coast, with 6 to 10 feet of inundation expected between the Ochlockonee and Suwannee rivers on Monday.
Michael Brennan, director of the hurricane center, emphasized the severity of the forecasted rainfall, stating, „There’s some really amazing rainfall totals being forecast and amazing in a bad way.“ The potential impacts of flooding are expected to last through Friday, particularly in low-lying areas near the coast such as Savannah, Georgia; Hilton Head, South Carolina; and Charleston, South Carolina.
As Debby’s outer bands grazed the west coast of Florida, flooding streets and causing power outages, Sarasota County officials reported that most roadways on Siesta Key were underwater. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis cautioned about the potential for significant flooding in North Central Florida, comparing the storm’s track to Hurricane Idalia but noting that Debby would bring much more rainfall.
A hurricane warning has been issued for parts of the Big Bend and the Florida Panhandle, with tropical storm warnings posted for Florida’s West Coast, the southern Florida Keys, and Dry Tortugas. Forecasters have highlighted the risks of river flooding and overwhelmed drainage systems, with 6 to 12 inches (15 centimeters to 30 centimeters) of rain and up to 18 inches (46 centimeters) in isolated areas of Florida expected.
Flat Florida’s susceptibility to flooding, even on clear days, raises concerns about the storm surge of 2 to 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters) along most of the Gulf Coast, including Tampa Bay. A storm tide of up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) is anticipated north of Tampa Bay in the sparsely populated Big Bend region, prompting mandatory evacuations in Citrus and Levy counties and voluntary evacuations in Hernando, Manatee, Pasco, and Taylor counties.
Residents and businesses in potentially affected areas have been preparing for the storm, with individuals in Steinhatchee, Florida, moving items to higher ground and businesses like Savannah Canoe and Kayak securing their equipment. Governors of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina have declared states of emergency, with preparations including sandbag distribution, National Guard activation, and utility crew readiness.
In conclusion, the impending impact of Hurricane Debby on Florida and neighboring states underscores the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of severe weather events. As the storm approaches landfall, residents and authorities must remain alert and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks and ensure safety.
