Tyler Animal Control is taking steps to prevent mosquitoes this summer.

As the summer months approach, the City of Tyler is ramping up its efforts to prevent mosquitoes from becoming a nuisance in the community. Mary Fowler, the City of Tyler Animal and Mosquito Control Supervisor, highlighted the importance of mosquito control, stating that the mosquito season seems to be getting longer each year.

The city’s mosquito prevention efforts kick off in April, with Tyler Animal Control team members strategically placing mosquito briquets in Tyler creeks. These briquets are all-natural and environmentally friendly, designed to disrupt the mosquito life cycle before they hatch. The briquets last for an impressive 160 days, providing long-lasting protection against these pesky insects.

Fowler explained that when mosquitoes attempt to hatch from the larvae, the briquets cause mutations that prevent them from developing into full-grown mosquitoes. This innovative approach to mosquito control helps to significantly reduce the mosquito population in Tyler.

In addition to using mosquito briquets, Tyler Animal Control also employs mineral oil to combat mosquito larvae. By applying mineral oil to standing water, the larvae are deprived of the air they need to survive, effectively eliminating them from the environment.

When residents report mosquito issues, Tyler Animal Control promptly investigates nearby creeks and inspects the complainant’s property for potential breeding grounds. Fowler emphasized the importance of eliminating standing water around homes, as even small amounts can harbor hundreds of mosquito eggs.

While Tyler Animal Control is unable to treat private properties, they are dedicated to educating residents on mosquito prevention strategies. Fowler stressed the role of mosquitoes in spreading diseases and the city’s commitment to preventing outbreaks through proactive mosquito control measures.

As the rainy season comes to an end in Tyler, the remaining standing water poses a significant risk for mosquito breeding. Residents are encouraged to take proactive measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites by following the four D’s: using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long-sleeved clothing, avoiding outdoor activities during dawn and dusk, and draining any standing water around their homes.

In conclusion, the City of Tyler’s proactive approach to mosquito control demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of its residents. By implementing innovative strategies and educating the public on mosquito prevention, Tyler is taking important steps to mitigate the risks associated with these disease-carrying insects.Residents are encouraged to do their part by following the recommended mosquito prevention tips and working together with city officials to create a mosquito-free environment for all.
