In a world where surveillance cameras are becoming increasingly common, it’s not uncommon to feel like you’re constantly being watched. However, a recent TikTok video has shown that this feeling may not be exclusive to humans. Cats, it seems, can also sense when they are being monitored.
The video in question, posted on July 12 by Kassandra Di Cosola, a 29-year-old from Toronto, Canada, captured a surprising moment when her cats seemed to be aware of the camera’s presence. Di Cosola and her fiancé were out enjoying cocktails when they decided to check their pet camera to see what their feline companions were up to. To their amazement, the cats were staring directly into the camera, almost as if they knew they were being watched.
Di Cosola admitted to Newsweek that she regularly spies on her cats through the pet camera, finding it amusing to see what they get up to when she’s not at home. The footage shared on TikTok under the account @francoisthemainecoon quickly went viral, garnering over 2 million views. The video shows Di Cosola covering her mouth as she giggles, before revealing the amusing sight of her cats, Louie and Francois, staring directly into the camera.
The clip, which has received over 408,000 likes, captures the cats‘ curious and somewhat suspicious behavior as they investigate the camera. Di Cosola mentioned that while this was the first time they had stared directly into the camera, she believes they are now catching on to the fact that they are being watched.
The video has sparked a flurry of comments from viewers speculating on what the cats might be thinking. Some suggested that the cats were signaling that they were aware of being watched, while others humorously interpreted their expressions as disbelief or surprise.
A study conducted on pet owners revealed that a significant percentage of cat and dog owners regularly check in on their pets through cameras. The survey found that 44 percent of pet owners peek at their pets four or more times a day, with 94 percent describing it as the highlight of their day.
Di Cosola shared that the motivation behind purchasing a pet camera was to ensure the well-being of her cats, especially after a previous pet had passed away unexpectedly. The camera provided her with reassurance that her furry friends were safe and sound even when she wasn’t at home.
