Vietnamese Fishing Boat Arrested by KKP in North Natuna Sea

On Thursday, August 22, 2024, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) made a significant breakthrough in combating illegal fishing activities in the North Natuna Sea. A total of 9 crew members and one foreign fishing vessel from Vietnam were apprehended for engaging in unauthorized fishing operations. This successful operation was carried out by the ORCA 03 Patrol Vessel, under the supervision of the Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP), Pung Nugroho Saksono.

The Vietnamese fishing vessel, identified as BV 93481 TS, was intercepted and detained by the Indonesian authorities. It was discovered that the vessel did not possess valid fishing permits and was utilizing prohibited trawl fishing gear. This blatant violation of maritime regulations posed a serious threat to the marine ecosystem and local fishing communities in the area.

The surveillance operation was initiated following reports from Natuna fishermen, who alerted the authorities about the presence of the foreign fishing vessel in the North Natuna Sea. The timely response from the Indonesian enforcement agencies led to the apprehension of the illegal fishing vessel and the prevention of potential losses amounting to IDR 1.1 billion.

Upon inspection, the Vietnamese vessel was found to be carrying approximately 1 ton of mixed fish, further confirming its involvement in illegal fishing activities. The 9 crew members, all Vietnamese nationals, were taken into custody for further investigation. The vessel was promptly escorted to the PSDKP base in Batam, where Fisheries Civil Service Investigators (PPNS) will take strict action in accordance with the law.

This successful operation underscores Indonesia’s commitment to safeguarding its marine resources and combating illegal fishing practices. The collaboration between the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and other relevant agencies has proven to be effective in upholding maritime laws and protecting the country’s marine biodiversity.

The apprehension of the Vietnamese fishing vessel serves as a warning to other foreign vessels that may attempt to engage in illegal fishing activities in Indonesian waters. The strict enforcement of regulations and the swift response from Indonesian authorities demonstrate the government’s determination to preserve the marine environment and support the livelihoods of local fishermen.

In conclusion, the recent arrest of the Vietnamese fishing vessel in the North Natuna Sea is a significant milestone in Indonesia’s efforts to combat illegal fishing. It sends a clear message that illegal activities will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will be held accountable for their actions. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries continues to prioritize marine conservation and sustainable fishing practices to ensure the long-term viability of Indonesia’s marine resources.
