Former Michigan State University classmates David Oh and Cody Williams have turned their love for dogs into a unique business venture in Detroit. Barkside, Detroit’s first dog park and bar, located in the West Village neighborhood on the city’s east side, offers a space where both dogs and their owners can socialize and relax together.
David Oh, who previously worked in the technology and automotive industries for 12 years, got the idea for Barkside while taking his Labradoodle, Malla, to a dog park every day after work. He envisioned creating a more elevated experience than traditional dog parks, with amenities for both humans and dogs, as well as a safer environment for pets to play.
After keeping the idea in the back of his mind for over five years, Oh decided to turn his dream into reality on his 30th birthday. He approached his friend and former classmate, Cody Williams, who shared his passion for dogs. Together, they began working on turning their vision into a tangible business concept.
The duo meticulously planned and researched every aspect of Barkside, from dog safety protocols to bar operations. They established rules for the park, requiring all dogs to be registered with their vaccine information and spayed or neutered if they are a year or older. Trained staff, known as Rufferees, monitor the park to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
To support the establishment of Barkside, Oh and Williams applied for a grant from Motor City Match, a small business incubator in Detroit. They were awarded $55,000 to help bring their innovative business idea to life. Barkside stood out among the applicants due to its unique concept, and it became the 169th business to open with support from Motor City Match.
Since its opening in November, Barkside has become a popular destination for dog owners and dog lovers alike. With over 10,000 total dogs and 3,000 unique dogs visiting based on registration records, Barkside has created a vibrant community where patrons can bond over drinks at the bar, participate in themed trivia nights, and enjoy other organized events.
The diverse clientele at Barkside includes kids, adults, senior citizens, regulars, and new visitors, as well as dog owners and dog lovers without pets. Visitors like Riss Dezort, Liz Malone, Erin Malone, and Erin Spies have all praised the welcoming atmosphere and fun experiences at Barkside, making it a favorite destination for families and individuals alike.
Despite the challenges of running a business, Oh and Williams find joy in seeing the community they have built at Barkside. The meaningful interactions with customers and the positive impact on both people and pets make all the hard work and long days worth it. Barkside has received accolades, including a Spirit of Detroit award from Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, further solidifying its place as a beloved establishment in the city.
For those interested in visiting Barkside, the business hours, event schedule, and other information can be found on their website at www.barksidedogbar.com. With its unique concept, vibrant community, and dedication to creating a safe and enjoyable space for dogs and their owners, Barkside has quickly become a must-visit destination in Detroit.
