Volunteers remove horses from Elizabeth City equestrian facility

In Pasquotank County, North Carolina, a distressing situation unfolded as deputies intervened to rescue 23 horses from an equine facility. The Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the U.S. Equine Rescue League, determined that the horses were in poor condition while housed at the Skyward Pines Equestrian Center. This rescue mission aimed to provide these animals with the care and support they desperately needed.

One individual, Ivy, who had previously assisted at the facility as a young teen, expressed deep concern for the horses‘ well-being. She recounted how the horses were once in good condition but had deteriorated significantly by the time of the rescue. Ivy’s emotional attachment to the horses was evident as she shared her distress over not being able to see her co-owned horse for months. Witnessing the horses‘ suffering firsthand, Ivy and other volunteers were moved to take action to help these animals in need.

Volunteers described the horses as „emaciated,“ highlighting the severity of their condition. Wendy Wild, a volunteer for USERL, expressed heartbreak over the neglect these horses endured, especially considering that they were used daily by children. The rescue efforts aimed to provide these horses with a chance at rehabilitation and a better quality of life.

Following the rescue operation, plans were made to allocate the rescued horses to various organizations for care and rehabilitation. Two horses were designated for Southern Hope Animal Rescue, two for Saving Grace Rescue, some were returned to their original owners who had boarded them, and others were to be fostered through USERL. These organizations ensured that the horses would be placed in safe environments where they could receive the necessary support and attention.

As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the horses‘ neglect continues, no charges have been announced. Maj. Aaron Wallio of the Pasquotank Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of reviewing each case thoroughly with the District Attorney’s office to determine the appropriate course of action. The focus remains on providing the rescued horses with the care they need to recover from their ordeal.
