Welfare organization records incidents of exotic animals escaping and attacking

Exotic Animal Escapes and Attacks: A Growing Concern in Canada

In recent years, the issue of exotic animal escapes and attacks in Canada has garnered increasing attention. From the infamous case of Darwin, the Ikea monkey, to the more recent incidents involving a kangaroo, alligator, and tiger, these events have highlighted the dangers of keeping exotic wildlife in captivity. World Animal Protection Canada is taking steps to address this ongoing problem by creating a new database and interactive online map to document these incidents.

The database, which has already documented over 200 exotic animal escapes, attacks, and disease outbreaks in Canada over the last 40 years, reveals an average of 12 incidents per year in the last decade. Michèle Hamers, wildlife campaign manager for World Animal Protection Canada, emphasizes the need for comprehensive laws to protect both animals and people from the risks associated with keeping exotic animals in captivity.

One of the key issues highlighted by the database is the patchwork of regulations governing the keeping of exotic animals in Canada. While some provinces have limitations on which animals are allowed as pets, Ontario lacks comprehensive laws in this regard. This lack of uniformity has led to confusion and challenges for enforcement officers tasked with ensuring the safety and well-being of both animals and the public.

The incidents documented in the database range from escapes by snakes, tigers, lions, monkeys, alligators, and elephants to attacks on individuals by these animals. In many cases, escaped animals face tragic outcomes, such as being shot to protect humans or succumbing to Canada’s harsh climate. The stress of captivity can also have fatal consequences, as seen in the case of a jaguar that died from a heart attack after escaping from a magic show.

The dangers posed by exotic animals in captivity are not limited to physical harm. An outbreak of salmonella linked to exotic snakes kept as house pets has resulted in numerous illnesses and hospitalizations, with tragic consequences for some individuals. Incidents like these underscore the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement measures to prevent further harm.

While some municipalities have taken steps to address the issue, such as passing new exotic animal laws in response to specific incidents, more comprehensive action is needed at the provincial and federal levels. Hamers advocates for a ban on non-native animals in captivity and the establishment of a limited list of permitted species to prevent exploitation and ensure the welfare of exotic animals.

As the online map continues to grow and document more incidents, Hamers hopes that public awareness and pressure will lead to meaningful change in how exotic animals are kept in Canada. By advocating for stronger regulations and a unified approach to the captive wildlife trade, we can work towards a future where all animals are treated with the care and respect they deserve.
