What to do if you come across baby wild animals

As spring arrives in Maine, the state’s wildlife comes alive with the birth of baby animals. Keel Kemper, a regional biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, is inundated with calls from concerned citizens who have come across young wild animals and birds. While the instinct to help these vulnerable creatures is strong, Kemper emphasizes the importance of leaving them be in most cases.

One of the most common sightings is that of fawns, the young offspring of deer. Fawns are often left alone by their mothers for extended periods of time, as they are well-camouflaged and lack a scent that could attract predators. It is crucial not to disturb a fawn unless there is clear evidence that the mother is not returning. In such cases, contacting a wildlife rehabilitator is the best course of action.

Similarly, baby raccoons are frequently found by concerned individuals. Raccoon mothers often leave their young in dens while they go off to feed. Even if something startles the mother and she runs off, she is likely to return for her babies. Observing from a distance and giving the mother a chance to come back is the best approach.

Squirrels, including red, gray, and flying squirrels, also have vulnerable babies that may be seen without their mothers. If a baby squirrel is found on the ground, it is best to protect it from predators and wait for the mother to retrieve it. Taking the baby to a wildlife rehabilitator is not always advisable due to the risk of rabies transmission.

Skunks, another rabies vector species, should not be removed from where they are found. If baby skunks are seen without their mother, observing from a distance is recommended. If the mother does not return, assessing the young skunks‘ health and capabilities can help determine if they need intervention.

Fox kits, young foxes, are often seen playing under the watchful eye of their parents. If they appear healthy and energetic, it is best to leave them alone. However, if they seem sickly or weak, contacting a rehabilitator may be necessary. Porcupines, known for their defensive quills, also have babies that are left alone by their mothers while they feed. If a baby porcupine is found and appears healthy, it is likely that the mother is nearby and does not need to be rescued.

Rabbits, despite their healthy population in Maine, have babies that are rarely seen. If a nest of baby bunnies is discovered, it is important to avoid touching them and monitor for the mother’s return. If she does not come back within 24 hours, contacting a rehabilitator may be necessary.

In conclusion, while the sight of baby wild animals may tug at our heartstrings, it is essential to remember that nature often knows best. By observing from a distance and allowing wildlife to care for their young, we can ensure the well-being of these creatures and respect their natural instincts. If in doubt, contacting a licensed wildlife rehabilitator is always a safe option.
