Woman arrested following seizure of animals by Lynchburg Animal Control due to „deplorable conditions“

In a shocking case of animal hoarding, Lynchburg Animal Control recently rescued 15 dogs and a pet bird from deplorable and unsanitary conditions in Lynchburg, Virginia. The distressing situation came to light after a complaint was made regarding animal hoarding in the 1600 block of Shaffer Street. Upon arrival, Animal Control officers were appalled by what they found and immediately obtained a search warrant to investigate further.

The animals were discovered inside the home, living in squalid conditions, and were promptly seized by authorities. They were then taken to the Lynchburg Humane Society for evaluation and care. The poor living conditions were so severe that Lynchburg City Inspections had no choice but to condemn the property due to its hazardous state.

Following a civil seizure hearing at Lynchburg General District Court on July 22, 54-year-old Ashley Elizabeth Owen was charged with five counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. This serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper animal care and the consequences of neglecting the well-being of animals.

The Lynchburg Humane Society, which took in the rescued animals, provided an update on their condition. The dogs, mostly small chihuahua mixes with one larger dog, were found living together in the same home. Some of the dogs were pregnant when they arrived at the shelter, with two of them giving birth to puppies recently. Coco and Sweetness, along with a few other dogs, are in need of foster homes, while the rest of the dogs are now available for adoption.
